Bengaluru: Price of kitchen staple tomato has crashed from Rs 50 a kg to as low as Rs 10 in about a week, but the relief is not uniform across varieties. Different parts of the city quoted different price points during a TOI dipstick survey.Glut in production, slow offtake and tapering of demand were cited as reasons behind the price crash. The city gets its tomatoes from within Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In Karnataka, Kolar is the biggest producer with around 15,000 acres, and the crop is exported to northern states and neighbouring countries like Bangladesh.Tomatoes on multiple online platforms are listed at Rs 30-40 a kg, depending on variety, size and quality.A vegetable vendor from South End Circle said the per-kg price has gone down from Rs 50 to Rs 30 in four days and the demand for tomatoes has also gone down from the customers during the festive season.Another vegetable vendor from Basavanagudi said that the price has declined to Rs 40, Rs 30 and even Rs 20 for some in the past one week, depending on the quality and variety. “We saw rainfall a few days ago. Despite the festival demand, the market is still left with plenty of stock. That’s why prices have come down.”However, multiple vendors in Koramangala said prices have stayed in the Rs 25-35 range for quite some time and they have not seen any sudden drop.
