Kolkata: Four individuals, including a woman, were arrested on Thursday afternoon after allegedly assaulting, verbally abusing, and unlawfully confining a police officer and his associate during an investigation into an illegal construction site in Bhowanipore. The incident occurred around 2.30 pm when sub-inspector Pravash Mazumder of Bhowanipore Police Station, accompanied by Kolkata Police home guard Md. Nurjalal, arrived at Girish Mukherjee Road. The officer was inspecting the location after singer Bishnupriya Chakroborty filed a complaint regarding unauthorised construction on the second floor of a building and illegal occupation of the terrace. The accused has allegedly been involved in illegal construction for a long time. Police said, SI Mazumder saw several labourers carrying out construction work in a negligent manner that posed a serious safety hazard to people on the ground level. When the officer began questioning the workers, four people responsible for the construction, all of them tenants of the house — Lokenath Dubey (46), Baikunth Nath Dubey (48), Sita Kumari Dubey (50), and an outsider Vinod Roy (42) — confronted the cops in an aggressive manner.Without provocation, Lokenath, Baikunth, and Roy allegedly pounced on Mazumder, physically assaulting him with punches, slaps, and blows. When Nurjalal attempted to intervene, the group manhandled him, preventing both officers from performing their duties. To worsen matters, the group locked the main entrance of the building to prevent the officers from calling reinforcements or leaving the premises.Despite the scuffle, Nurjalal managed to call the officer-in charge of Bhowanipore PS. A police team was dispatched and both the officers were rescued. The accused have been booked under Sections 121(1) [causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty] and 3(5) [joint criminal liability] of the BNS, adding to the initial case registered under Sections 79 and 54 of the BNS.
