Telangana plans one-time settlement to recover ₹2,000 crore in industrial power dues

Hyderabad: The Telangana govt has announced a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme to help industries clear pending electricity dues, with power utilities expected to recover about ₹2,000 crore through the initiative. Officials said the exact number of eligible industries and the total dues covered under the scheme were yet to be worked out.Deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, who also holds the energy portfolio, directed officials to prepare comprehensive proposals for settling outstanding industrial power bills, providing relief to eligible consumers while helping distribution companies recover long-pending arrears. He also asked senior finance department officials to expedite the recovery of dues owed by various government departments to Singareni Collieries Company Limited, TG Genco, TG Transco and other power sector organisations.During a review meeting on power demand and supply on Thursday, Vikramarka directed officials to ensure adequate preparedness across generation, transmission and distribution systems to meet rising electricity demand in the coming months. The meeting, attended by special chief secretary (energy) Naveen Mittal, finance principal secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Singareni CMD Buddha Prakash Jyoti and others, reviewed measures to avert power shortages amid the possibility of reduced hydel generation due to the El Niño effect and an anticipated rise in demand. The deputy CM called for a comprehensive action plan to increase daily thermal power generation to 140 million units to meet agricultural and domestic demand during the upcoming rabi and summer seasons.Officials informed him that the average daily thermal power generation had reached approximately 91 million units, while production had touched 118 million units on a single day recently. He asked the officials to further increase generation and work towards achieving the daily target of 140 million units. To ensure uninterrupted coal supplies to two units at the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant, an alternative supply arrangement has been made with Coal India Limited. Coal supplies under the arrangement are expected to begin in November. The deputy CM also called for focused efforts to maximise generation at the Yadadri plant. Officials said four of its five 800MW units were already generating power, while the fifth unit was synchronised with the grid on Oct 20.TG Genco’s average daily thermal generation stood at 65.90 million units in 2024-25 and about 76.46 million units in 2025-26. In the current financial year, the average rose to 90.97 million units as of Oct 21, an increase of 14.51 million units, or about 19%, over the previous financial year.Vikramarka directed officials to operate all thermal power plant units at maximum capacity, improve plant load factors (PLF) and monitor daily generation to ensure the prescribed targets were met.
