Calangute: Electricity wires powering streetlights along the enclosed footpath from St Alex Church to Boa Viagem have been stolen twice, leaving the walkway in darkness, the Calangute panchayat said.“People were complaining that the streetlights were not working. When we checked, we were surprised to find that the wires which were connecting the lights were stolen. This has happened twice and that’s why the lights were not working. Now we’ve put new wires in such a way that they cannot be removed,” Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira said.The panchayat has also installed barricades along the walkway to improve safety and prevent snakes from surrounding fields from entering the footpath, Sequeira said.“We’ve also installed CCTV cameras from St Alex Church to Boa Viagem to discourage any unlawful activities because some people were coming and drinking here. We want to encourage people to come here and walk for health and fitness,” he said.
