Ludhiana: A latecomer monsoon resumed on Friday, triggering severe weather alerts across the district despite failing to break a stifling, humid heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the region, warning of impending heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts reaching up to 50 kmph. The city recorded 8 mm of rain during the day, but the precipitation failed to lower daytime temperatures, which peaked at 35.6°C — slightly above average for this time of year and nearly 2.5 degrees warmer than Thursday. Overnight temperatures dropped to 25.6°C.Weather officials in Chandigarh expect partly cloudy skies to persist for the next six days, with daytime temperatures projected to fall as the monsoon intensifies.“The initial rainfall has only exacerbated the region’s oppressive humidity,” said local resident Sunil Kumar. “Stepping outdoors even for a short while feels uncomfortable because of the sticky conditions.”The indoor environment has proved equally challenging. “The rain has brought relief from the scorching heat, but the humidity has made household chores exhausting,” resident Kanchan said. “It’s difficult to work in the kitchen for long, and clothes are also taking more time to dry.”Forecasters have urged the public and local authorities to remain vigilant as the adverse weather system develops.
