State to map stray dogs, pets and cattle ward-wise

Panaji: The directorate of animal husbandry and veterinary services on Friday announced that a state-wide survey will be conducted to collect data on stray dogs, pet dogs and stray cattle found along highways and roads. The survey will be carried out area- and locality-wise by urban and rural local bodies across the state from Oct 1 to 15.The survey is being conducted following directions issued by the Bombay high court in a suo motu writ petition, in compliance with directions issued by the Supreme Court in Suo Moto Writ Petition No. 5 of 2025, the directorate said.As part of the exercise, all feeders and volunteers in every ward have been requested to contact their respective panch, councillor or corporator and provide information on stray dogs and stray cattle in their local areas by Sept 25.The directorate said a door-to-door campaign will also be undertaken by the concerned ward member, panch, councillor or corporator, with the assistance of dog feeders and volunteers. The exercise will focus on identifying the number of domesticated or pet dogs in each ward, along with details such as their gender and sterilisation status. The directorate has urged members of the public, particularly dog feeders and volunteers, to extend their cooperation and provide accurate information to the concerned local bodies. It said the data collected through the exercise will help ensure the successful and systematic conduct of the state-wide survey.
