State mulls metro feasibility study along proposed Ring Road project

Guwahati: Assam has proposed a metro feasibility study along the planned Guwahati Ring Road to ease congestion.Presenting the budget in the assembly , finance minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said govt will assess the viability of developing a mass rapid transit system over or alongside the proposed Ring Road. The study will examine the technical, financial and operational aspects of integrating metro infrastructure with the road project. The move is aimed at decongesting Guwahati, improving public transport and supporting planned urban expansion beyond the city’s existing core.Baruah said the proposal is part of a broader plan to promote satellite townships outside the road-cum-rail Ring Road. Govt hopes that linking mass transit with the expanding road network will improve connectivity, cut travel time and support sustainable growth in the Guwahati metropolitan region. The proposed metro plan is tied to the 121-km Guwahati Ring Road project, one of Assam’s key infrastructure initiatives. The project includes a 55-km greenfield northern bypass, a 3-km six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra and six-laning of NH-27.Once completed, the Ring Road is expected to improve traffic flow, divert through traffic away from the city and strengthen regional connectivity. If found viable, the metro project could pave the way for Guwahati’s first large-scale metro-based transit system, complementing the city’s road network and addressing future mobility needs.
