Sr SI accused of sexually exploiting rape survivor

Lucknow: A senior sub-inspector (SSI) posted at Ashiyana police station has been suspended and booked after a BEd student accused him of sexually exploiting her on the pretext of marriage while he was investigating her rape complaint.The FIR against SSI Dharmveer Shahi was registered following a departmental inquiry, and the probe has been handed over to ACP, Cantonment.According to the complainant, she had earlier lodged a rape case against a man from Basti, alleging that he established physical relations with her on the promise of marriage. The case was initially registered in Basti and later transferred to Lucknow through a zero FIR before being marked to PGI police station.The student alleged that despite the transfer, Shahi continued to call her to Ashiyana police station, claiming he was still handling the investigation. She told police that the officer remained in regular contact with her and later promised to marry her and support her, following which he repeatedly exploited her.The complainant said she discovered about six weeks ago that the officer was already married. She alleged that when she questioned him and pressed for marriage, he began avoiding her and later assaulted and threatened her. She further accused the officer of snatching her mobile phone to destroy chats and other digital evidence and warned that she and her family would face consequences if she approached senior officers.After receiving her complaint, senior police officials ordered an inquiry. Based on the findings, an FIR was registered against Shahi and he was placed under suspension.DCP (central) Vikrant Veer confirmed the action, stating that the accused officer had been suspended and that the ACP, cantonment, was conducting the investigation. Further legal action will be taken based on evidence collected during the probe, police said.
