Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Saturday withdrew its proposed Rs 10 increase in meal charges, which was scheduled to take effect from Oct 1.The decision comes after sustained protests by Students Federation of India (SFI) and University Students Struggles Action Committee, which had opposed the hike since the university issued a circular on Sept 17.The university’s management council, at its meeting on Sept 26, decided to scrap the hike in view of the drought-like conditions prevailing in Maharashtra.SPPU has set up a committee headed by management council member Jyotsna Ekbote to review the functioning of the university refectory and canteens. The panel has been tasked with assessing the existing facilities and recommending measures to improve the quality of food and services.The university has also decided to waive examination fees for the upcoming exams for students hailing from drought-affected talukas.
