Chennai: Motorists heading towards Tidel Park on OMR need to be watchful while turning right near the Indira Nagar MRTS station as several vehicles take a wrong-side U-turn at the spot, leading to risk of collision with incoming vehicles.Soon after the L-shaped Madhya Kailash flyover was opened, traffic police installed a signal near the MRTS station, between the two U-shaped flyovers on the stretch. Signage on the stretch says that vehicles heading towards Tidel Park side can take a U-turn at the signal, but motorists on the other side (from Tidel Park to Sardar Patel Road) must not. But the rules are flouted rampantly.“This happens more frequently after 9pm when the roads are freer and vehicles pick up pace,” said Rishikesan, a commuter. “An auto driver made an abrupt U-turn near the spot one night, and I almost fell as my scooter skidded,” he said. A few barricades were also kicked down to enable the wrong-side U-turn. “A similar problem persists near Kasturba Nagar MRTS station,” said Kasturba Nagar South residents’ welfare association vice-president D Balaji. A traffic police officer said the signal was installed on the request of residents but added that it introduced more problems than solutions. “Personnel are usually posted during peak hours. But owing to election duty, we were unable to post adequate manpower over the past two weeks,” he said.
