Some take refuge in gurdwara, detained

New Delhi: Several protesters, fearing police action and detentions took refuge in Gurdwara Bangla Sahib permises in central Delhi Saturday. Heavy police presence was seen in the area starting morning. As videos of police entering the gurdwara premises were shared on social media, Aam Aadmi Party functionaries asked why they went insode a place of worship.DSGMC chief Harmeet Singh Kalka, however, accused AAP of trying to spread unrest and said protesters had attempted to force their way into the a hall in the gurdwara but were stopped by the staff. He also alleged that they came inside the premises with placards and raised slogans as part of their protest.“Today’s protest included dirty politics by AAP leaders, who demeaned the sanctity of guru-ghars. I am very surprised that the gurdwara, which is open for people from all walks of life and where everyone is served, is being used for protests,” Kalka said in a video statement. He also asked why police were being questioned for entering the premises.“After police entered to remove them, a big issue was made… If miscreants enter the premises, what will police do if not remove them? Would you prefer protesters to sloganeer inside the gurdwara?” he said.Criticising AAP and accusing it of politicising the issue, Kalka said, “I want to say this bluntly” No no one has the right to protest inside a gurdwara and we won’t tolerate any politics over this issue. Many are trying to include the gurdwara as a site for their politics, but they should not do that. It is our job to maintain the sanctity of the gurdwara and you can come here to fill your stomach or have a roof over your head at night.”Many people who wanted to join the protests had taken shelter at the gurdwara the previous night.
