Slur storm imperils BJP’s civic poll sweep campaign

Chandigarh: BJP’s internal strife after Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma allegedly used a slur to describe members of the influential Bishnoi political dynasty has derailed the party’s campaign for Haryana’s civic elections.Supporters of senior state BJP member Kuldeep Bishnoi have filed 14 criminal complaints across Haryana, accusing Sharma of referring to former chief minister Bhajan Lal and former deputy CM Chander Mohan as “badmash” (hoodlums). The remarks were reportedly made during a mayoral campaign launch in Panchkula, attended by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini. In a viral video, Kuldeep Bishnoi — the younger son of the late Bhajan Lal — claimed Sharma had received “more than she deserved” and could not handle her position. Bishnoi also targeted Haryana BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli for his handling of the fallout.Sharma has since retracted the comments, denying any intent to disparage the leaders. However, the controversy has placed the party on the defensive as it attempts to sweep seven local bodies.Badoli, speaking in Sonipat, acknowledged Bishnoi’s grievances and promised a formal party response. Meanwhile, Haryana Congress president Rao Narender Singh joined the fray, condemning the remarks as the opposition seeks to capitalise on the governing party’s fractured front.Sharma did not respond to requests for comment, with staff citing her involvement in a virtual meeting.
