New Delhi: A 417-metre-long skywalk equipped with travelators will be constructed at Anand Vihar to provide seamless connectivity between the railway station and ISBT, Kaushambi. It will also offer integrated access to the Namo Bharat station, the Delhi Metro station and the existing foot overbridge (FOB).As the existing FOB, connecting with Delhi Metro and Namo Bharat stations, is encroached on by vendors and its escalators are often non-operational, the new skywalk will be built parallel to the FOB and will connect all modes of public transport. Anand Vihar is one of Delhi-NCR’s busiest transport hubs, with thousands of commuters using various modes of transport daily.“National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has floated a tender for the construction of the skywalk. The proposed facility will have provisions for travelators, escalators and lifts, making movement easier for senior citizens, women, people travelling with children, persons with reduced mobility and passengers carrying luggage,” said an official of NCRTC, which is implementing the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor. The skywalk is proposed to be completed in 15 months after the award of the tender.Anand Vihar has two ISBTs at Anand Vihar and Kaushambi, two corridors of Delhi Metro (Pink and Blue lines), Anand Vihar railway station and Anand Vihar Namo Bharat station.“Passenger volumes across metro, railway, bus and Namo Bharat services have grown over the years, increasing pressure on existing pedestrian links, particularly during peak hours. The skywalk is being planned as an additional corridor to support this rising demand and improve circulation across the station area,” said the official.This additional, direct and weather-protected pedestrian corridor is expected to ease pressure on the station precinct, improve connectivity between major transport systems and support more organised movement in one of the NCR’s most congested transit hubs, he added.The project will also facilitate a single-point security check between Namo Bharat and Delhi Metro services at Anand Vihar, enabling passengers to switch between the two systems without repeated security screening.According to the tender, the scope of work includes the construction of the entire skywalk along with roofing, structural works, foundations and supporting infrastructure. The project will also include provisions for CCTV systems, solar panels, drainage arrangements and other commuter amenities.Anand Vihar Namo Bharat station is also connected to Chaudhary Charan Singh Marg by three bridges over the Ghazipur drain. The 10-metre-wide right bridge serves as the vehicular entry point, allowing taxis and private vehicles to drop passengers directly at the station gate. The 13-metre-wide left bridge provides an exit route for these vehicles back to the main road. The 5-metre-wide middle bridge is dedicated to pedestrian movement within the station premises.
