New Delhi: Security was tightened across the city and six metro stations were closed in central Delhi Monday ahead of the INDIA bloc’s march to Supreme Court, where leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi and other alliance leaders submitted a plea against the SIR and CEC Gyanesh Kumar.Police sources said less than 50 people were detained. The six metro stations that were shut were Patel Chowk, Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat and Barakhamba Road, which were shut from 6am to 5pm, according to an update by the authorities.Police said the security arrangements were made in view of the proposed gathering and the restrictions imposed under Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the New Delhi area. They added that a case was registered on the complaint of Harmeet Singh Kalka, president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), alleging disruption at the gurdwara. The complaint alleged that workers and supporters associated with a political party began protesting inside the premises, creating chaos and disturbance and attempting to use the sanctity of the Guru Ghar for political activity. “The gurdwara management and sewadars intervened to maintain peace,” the complaint said. The complaint said that such political activity in a place of worship had deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh Sangat.Security was also tightened on the city’s borders, at railway stations, bus terminals and other sensitive locations to prevent unauthorised gatherings.Police sources said around 300 social media posts allegedly aimed at spreading rumours or triggering public unrest were taken down.Replying to one post related to a student, who is allegedly missing and was beaten during detention, DCP, New Delhi, said: “Reports claiming a student has gone missing following her detention by Delhi Police are incorrect. She was detained during a protest at Connaught Place, where she bit a police officer on the hand. As per standard procedure, she was taken for a mandatory medical examination and will be released immediately afterwards. Please verify facts before circulating unverified information.”Another post claimed that Rahul Gandhi was under attack. Delhi Police replied: “This handle has a documented history of spreading doctored media, old footage and fabricated narratives to mislead the public.”“Do not fall for or amplify this rumour,” police said.
