Guwahati: Congress’s Assam president and deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, on Friday accused the state govt of failing to deliver justice to singer Zubeen Garg, who died in Singapore last year while swimming in the sea.Gogoi, who visited Zubeen Kshetra, the Zubeen memorial, alleged that the Assam Police SIT failed to present all the facts and evidence before the court. He claimed that those arrested in connection with the case were being granted bail one after another, raising questions about the SIT’s purpose.“There is apprehension among people that the SIT formed by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma was not constituted to deliver justice to Zubeen Garg, but to protect those connected with his death,” he said.He added that people were saddened and surprised by the latest developments. He alleged that failure to deliver justice to Zubeen would be the biggest stain on Sarma’s political career. The Gauhati High Court recently granted bail to singer Amritprava Mahanta and Zubeen’s cousin and suspended Assam Police officer Sandipon Garg in the case. Their bail petitions were earlier rejected by the district court. They are among the seven accused arrested in the case. The other five are Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore; Zubeen’s bandmate Shekharjyoti Goswami; manager Siddharth Sharma; and two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya. They have been lodged in different jails since Oct 15 last year.Amritprava, Shyamkanu, Siddharth and Shekharjyoti face charges of murder, criminal conspiracy and other offences, while Sandipon faces a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.A fast-track court is conducting the trial on a day-to-day basis.
