Skywalk to help pedestrians cross busy Vikas Marg junction

New Delhi: Crossing the busy Vikas Marg junction on foot could get easier with Public Works Department (PWD) seeking architectural and engineering consultancy services to design a 500-metre skywalk near Nirman Vihar Metro Station. The proposed facility aims to streamline pedestrian movement across four directions, including Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Preet Vihar and V3S Mall-Laxmi Nagar District Centre, where commuters currently have to navigate a busy traffic junction. The consultancy brief calls for a comprehensive design, covering the structure’s alignment, foundations, access points, lighting, safety features and the development of areas around it.The selected consultant will first conduct soil investigations, topographical surveys and an assessment of existing site conditions and underground utilities. Based on these findings, it will prepare layout plans and a concept design, including 3D views, incorporating suggestions from PWD and other authorities concerned. The design will provide for staircases and ramps, while the feasibility of lifts and escalators will also be examined. Barrier-free access for elderly people and persons with disabilities is among the requirements. Safety provisions are expected to include anti-skid flooring, railings, adequate lighting, CCTV surveillance, fire detection systems and emergency exits. The plan also extends beyond the elevated walkway itself. Pedestrian plazas, waiting areas, seating, landscaping, plantations, public amenities and directional signboards will be considered around its approaches to improve accessibility and make navigation easier for commuters.Once the design is approved, the consultant will prepare a detailed project report, preliminary cost estimates, structural calculations, foundation plans and tender documents. These will form the basis for inviting construction bids.
