Historically significant as a key Buddhist pilgrimage site, Shravasti district in Uttar Pradesh has witnessed significant strides in infrastructure development, transforming it from a relatively backward area into a more connected region in the last about nine years ever since Yogi Adityanath became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. The district has benefited from focused government initiatives aimed at improving road networks and overall accessibility. Major highway projects, including upgrades linked to the Barabanki-Bahraich corridor and connections toward the Nepal border, have enhanced connectivity. These four-lane developments not only facilitate smoother travel but also boost trade and economic activities in this district, one of the aspirational districts.Tourism, particularly Buddhist circuit development, has received a strong push, leveraging Shravasti’s spiritual importance where Lord Buddha spent significant time. The government has invested in infrastructure to attract pilgrims and tourists, including advancements toward an airport in the district. Projects worth hundreds of crores have been inaugurated, focusing on better amenities, heritage preservation, and promotion of sites like those associated with Buddhist history. This aligns with broader state efforts to develop religious tourism circuits, drawing international visitors and generating local employment. In the realm of basic amenities and welfare, schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Swachh Bharat Mission, and health initiatives have made notable inroads. Thousands of houses have been provided to beneficiaries, alongside construction of individual and community toilets, improving sanitation and dignity, especially for women. Healthcare and education facilities have been upgraded through various state programs, contributing to better human development indicators in a district that was previously lagging. Direct Benefit Transfers have ensured more efficient delivery of welfare support.Agriculture and rural economy have seen enhancements through irrigation improvements, market linkages, and skill development programs under the Yogi government. As part of One District One Product (ODOP) and related initiatives, local produce and traditional practices have gained support, helping farmers increase incomes. Electrification, including for tube wells, and rural road connectivity under schemes like PM Gram Sadak Yojana have reduced isolation of villages. These measures have contributed to overall economic growth, with Shravasti showing positive trends in district-level GDP contributions.Under the leadership of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Shravasti district has achieved near-complete electrification, marking a transformative shift from chronic power shortages to reliable electricity access for its rural population. Through schemes like DDUGJY (Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana), IPDS, and state initiatives, all villages and households in the district have been connected to the grid, with significant upgrades in substations, feeders, and smart metering. This has not only powered homes, schools, and health centres but also energised agriculture via free or subsidised connections to tube wells, boosted small industries including ODOP tribal crafts, and improved overall quality of life in this aspirational district. The progress aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s broader success in achieving 100% village electrification, reducing outages, and supporting economic activities in previously underserved areas like Shravasti.Law and order improvements have created a more stable environment conducive to development. With stricter policing and reduced crime rates reported across Uttar Pradesh, investors and tourists feel safer visiting or operating in Shravasti. This stability has supported the execution of multiple projects in education, health, and connectivity, as highlighted during CM visits where foundations for works worth crores were laid.Overall, Shravasti’s progress reflects the state’s vision of inclusive and equitable growth for aspirational districts. Cumulative investments in infrastructure, tourism, and welfare have laid a foundation for sustained development, positioning the district better for future opportunities in a rapidly growing Uttar Pradesh economy. While challenges remain, the last nine years mark a clear shift toward modernization and empowerment of this historically rich area.Under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme in Uttar Pradesh, Shravasti district has been identified for its distinctive Tribal Craft, which encompasses a rich array of handmade products created by local artisans using traditional techniques. These include eco-friendly items such as baskets, trays, mats, wall hangings, and decorative pieces primarily made from natural materials like bamboo, grass, and other forest resources abundant in the region. The initiative, launched by the Yogi Adityanath government, focuses on preserving indigenous tribal skills passed down through generations while providing artisans with training, financial support, branding, and market linkages to boost their livelihoods. The ODOP programme in Shravasti has significantly contributed to socio-economic empowerment by supporting small family businesses, women artisans, and rural entrepreneurs, fostering inclusive rural development in this aspirational district. Through skill upgradation, common facility centres, and integration with e-commerce platforms and exhibitions, local crafts have gained wider visibility and demand both domestically and internationally. This has led to increased incomes, reduced migration, and cultural preservation, aligning with the broader goal of transforming traditional industries into sustainable economic drivers under the state’s Viksit Uttar Pradesh vision. The state’s exports nearly doubled from Rs 86,000 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 1.86 lakh crore in recent years, driven partly by handicraft clusters like Shravasti’s eco-friendly tribal items (baskets, mats, and decor), which have gained traction through branding, skill training, and market linkages. This has aided rural employment, preserved traditional skills, and added to the handicrafts segment’s role in elevating UP’s contribution to national GDP, aligning with the state’s push for inclusive and sustainable growth in backward districts.Chief minister Yogi Adityanath envisions transforming Shravasti into a model aspirational district through integrated development focused on tourism, connectivity, and inclusive growth as part of Viksit Uttar Pradesh 2047. Key plans include further expansion of the Shravasti Airport (with substantial land acquisition already underway and Rs 350 crore approved) to boost Buddhist pilgrimage and regional air travel, alongside upgraded road infrastructure such as four-lane highways linking to Nepal and neighbouring areas for enhanced trade and accessibility.
