No more Rs 1,500 airport cabs? Namma Metro’s Blue Line to Bengaluru airport gets new deadline
Namma Metro’s Blue Line will provide a crucial airport connection for Bengaluru commuters in the near future.

BENGALURU: For Bengaluru commuters tired of shelling out around Rs 1,500 for a cab ride to Kempegowda International Airport, a cheaper alternative is finally taking shape — Namma Metro’s Blue Line is set to connect the city to KIA.A Bengaluru-based creator, Rahul, recently shared an Instagram post highlighting the upcoming airport Metro connection, saying the days of expensive airport cabs could soon be numbered. But commuters will have to wait a little longer.Namma Metro’s 58km Blue Line, connecting Central Silk Board with Kempegowda International Airport, is now expected to become fully operational by March 2028. The corridor will be opened in phases, with the airport stretch expected to be commissioned before the entire line is completed.

Airport link by September 2027

According to the latest schedule, the Hebbal-KIA section is targeted for opening by September 2027. The Central Silk Board-KR Pura stretch is expected to begin commercial operations by mid-2027, while the remaining KR Pura-Hebbal section is likely to be completed between December 2027 and March 2028.The Blue Line will give passengers a direct Metro option to reach KIA, reducing dependence on taxis and private vehicles for airport trips. The airport connection is part of the larger Blue Line being built along Bengaluru’s traffic-heavy Outer Ring Road. The corridor will connect major employment hubs and residential areas before extending northwards towards the airport.

Why the airport Metro is taking so long

The Blue Line has faced several construction and integration challenges. One of the biggest is the section between Hebbal and Kempapura, where BMRCL is constructing infrastructure capable of accommodating four Metro tracks. This has been planned to allow the Blue Line to integrate with the proposed Orange Line in the future.Officials said a specialised three-pier portal structure is being built along about 1km between Hebbal and Kempapura to accommodate the four tracks — the first such configuration on Namma Metro’s mainline network.Construction along the Outer Ring Road has also been complicated by heavy traffic, utilities, land-related issues and station construction challenges.

From airport cabs to driverless Metro

The Blue Line will also introduce driverless Metro technology to Bengaluru. Its trains are equipped with automated control and safety systems and will undergo extensive testing before passenger services begin. For airport travellers, however, the biggest change may be much simpler: having the option to leave the car or cab behind.Once the Hebbal-KIA stretch opens, passengers from several parts of Bengaluru will be able to use the Metro for the airport journey, with further connectivity improving as the rest of the Blue Line becomes operational.
