Shillong: Meghalaya observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on Friday, recalling the human cost of India’s 1947 division.At the event at Lok Bhavan, governor CH Vijayashankar highlighted Partition’s lasting impact.Synod College assistant professor David Arnold Kharchandy said Partition was not merely a political development marking the end of British rule and the creation of India and Pakistan.“For millions of ordinary people, Partition meant much more than the drawing of the Radcliffe Line on a map. It resulted in the loss of homes, separation of families, disruption of communities and the beginning of uncertain journeys for people who were forced to leave behind everything familiar,” he added.Highlighting its impact on Meghalaya and the northeast following the creation of the border with present-day Bangladesh, he said: “Migration increased, trade routes changed, and families and communities found themselves separated by newly created political boundaries,” he mentioned.
