SHGs Meet Govt Over Midday Meal Plan

Kolkata: The school education department has introduced a plan to provide eggs to children twice a week. A meeting in this regard was conducted on Wednesday with local self-help groups (SHGs).At the meeting, the SHGs were asked to procure eggs from the local markets, boil those at existing community kitchens and distribute the same among schools, using their own vehicles, after getting final nod from the department. However, several groups requested for an official agreement before starting to implement the plan.During the meeting, the SHGs were informed that within three months, midday meal delivery would be fully handed over to Iskcon. However, the SHGs would remain part of the scheme in future by distributing eggs among the children separately, once the final order was issued by the department. The state govt will provide the necessary funds for procurement of the eggs. Until Iskcon fully takes over the scheme to distribute midday meals among 1,951 schools in the KMC area, the existing SHGs have been asked to continue their duties.“We asked the department official what complaints were raised against us that led to us being dropped out from the scheme. We failed to receive an appropriate response,” said a representative of a SHGDuring the meeting, many representatives sought a proper agreement for performing their duties.
