SGPC objects to reported Maharashtra move on Hazur Sahib management law

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Tuesday expressed concern over reports that the Maharashtra government plans to repeal the 1956 Act governing the management of Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded, and replace it with a new law.In a statement, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, one of Sikhism‘s five Takhts, is a highly revered religious institution and that any decision concerning its maryada (Sikh code of conduct), administration or religious autonomy should be taken only after consulting Sikh institutions, the jathedars of the Takhts and the SGPC.Dhami said the Maharashtra cabinet was reportedly considering amendments to the law governing the Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Management Board on the ground that the existing legislation had become outdated. He maintained that any move affecting the management or autonomy of the Takht without wider consultation with Sikh representatives could hurt Sikh sentiments.
