Amritsar : Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Friday censured the alleged torture of an Amritdhari Sikh youth, Mohanjeet Singh of Sheron village, and the alleged desecration of his kesh and kakaars after he raised questions about Punjab’s drug menace during Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit.SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami termed the allegations “extremely unfortunate and condemnable” and said any deliberate disrespect towards a Sikh’s articles of faith was a serious violation of religious values.According to the SGPC, Mohanjeet Singh was allegedly subjected to police excesses after raising his voice against the drug problem. Dhami said that instead of punishing a young man for questioning the government over a serious social issue, the authorities should have addressed his concerns.“Seeking answers from the government is the right of every citizen, and using police force to silence dissent is against the spirit of democracy,” Dhami said while demanding that accountability be fixed if police personnel were found to have acted outside the law and hurt the youth’s religious sentiments.Meanwhile, an SGPC delegation visited Mohanjeet Singh in hospital and enquired about his health. The delegation assured him of all possible assistance, including medical treatment and financial help, if required.
