Gurgaon: Garbage continues to pile up along roads and green belts in sectors 3, 5 and 6, with residents complaining of recurring open dumping, slow waste lifting and inadequate sweeping even after sanitation workers resumed work following their strike.Residents said waste is being repeatedly dumped at the same spots, leading to a foul smell and unhygienic conditions. The garbage also attracts rodents and stray animals, they added.RWA president of sectors 3, 5 and 6 TR Adlakha said garbage was being cleared slowly. “Garbage is not being lifted at the required pace. The presence of sanitation workers on the ground is also very low and regular sweeping has not fully resumed,” he said.Residents said waste left along roadsides was occupying space meant for pedestrians and, in several stretches, spilling onto the road and narrowing the space available for both pedestrians and vehicles.Former RWA president Dinesh Vashisht said people from adjoining areas often dumped waste at these locations, particularly late at night when nobody is watching. “Once the garbage is cleared, the same spots are filled again,” he said, adding that MCG should penalise those found dumping waste in the open.MCG officials attributed the slow clearance to the backlog accumulated during the sanitation workers’ strike. “A month of accumulated garbage cannot be cleared in a day. Work resumed only from Sept 14, so the situation will gradually come under control. The required sanitation manpower was being deployed area-wise,” an official said.The official added that one garbage collection site had been temporarily shut as work was underway there. Another site at Rajiv Chowk was being used for waste disposal. This was causing some difficulty for garbage collection vehicles in emptying their loads, he said.
