Mohali: Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh on Saturday inaugurated the construction of the ₹48.5 lakh Sohana canal water rising main project. The initiative will link Sohana village to the GMADA canal water supply scheme, injecting an additional 1.3 million liters of safe drinking water daily to sustain the area’s rapidly expanding population.Sohana currently relies entirely on five local tubewells for its daily water requirements. Local authorities determined these groundwater sources are no longer capable of meeting current or future consumer demands, leading to persistent issues with low pressure and intermittent supply during peak hours.The newly launched pipeline network aims to permanently eliminate tubewell dependency and resolve low-pressure issues across the historically significant village. By shifting to a canal-based grid, the network will ensure a more reliable and sanitary water supply, especially during seasonal summer spikes in usage.To support this infrastructure upgrade, the department of water supply and sanitation will also begin building two new underground storage reservoirs (UGSRs) within the next month. These reservoirs will streamline the storage and downstream distribution of the new surface water volume.The combined budget for both the rising main pipeline and the upcoming reservoirs totals approximately ₹98 lakh. The distribution network will become fully operational once the storage tanks are linked to the main distribution grid.
