Bengaluru: Alleging a glaring mismatch between public expenditure and the city’s infrastructure conditions, Bengaluru Navanirmana Party (BNP) Monday claimed that nearly Rs 50,000 crore has been spent on around 80,000 civic projects over the past decade. However, residents continue to grapple with potholes, flooding and traffic congestion. The party, as part of its #LekkaBeku campaign, released an updated database of civic-related projects and contracts executed over the past 10 years. According to BNP, the citizen portal compiles details of project costs, contractors, expenditure, work status and completion records across 198 wards in the city.Based on its analysis, BNP alleged that more than Rs 3 crore per kilometre has been spent on roads, footpaths and related civic infrastructure works. Despite this, it claimed Bengaluru’s infrastructure continues to fall far short of citizens’ expectations.Srikanth Narasimhan, founder and general secretary of BNP, asked, “These numbers raise a fundamental question: if so much money has been spent on Bengaluru’s development, why is it still struggling with basic civic problems?”He alleged that citizens continue to face dangerous roads, flooding during monsoons and severe traffic congestion despite the scale of spending. “Taxpayers are paying hard-earned money while politicians and authorities misuse public funds. Bengaluru’s citizens have every right to know where their money has gone and what it has delivered,” he said. The party said the database has been created to improve transparency and enable citizens to scrutinise public spending more effectively.
