Rs 2,235 crore benefit for Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd consumers due to Time-of-Day tariff

Mumbai: Time-of-Day (ToD) tariff concession has delivered major savings to electricity users across the state, with 70 lakh consumers receiving a combined benefit of Rs 2,235 crore since the scheme came into effect in July 2025, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) managing director Lokesh Chandra announced on Sunday. The concession applies to electricity consumed between 9am and 5pm and is aimed at encouraging greater daytime usage, when lower-cost renewable energy, especially solar power, is more widely available. Chandra said the initiative has significantly reduced power costs for industrial, commercial and domestic consumers.“High-Tension industrial consumers have emerged as the biggest beneficiaries under the scheme. A total of 15,907 HT industrial consumers have received benefits amounting to Rs 1,534 crore. Overall, when all industrial categories are taken together, including HT industrial, HT seasonal industrial, LT industrial and power loom units, 43,911 consumers have availed benefits worth Rs 1,774 crore,” Chandra said.A MSEDCL spokesperson said commercial users have also gained substantially. Across Maharashtra, 11,017 commercial consumers in HT and Low-Tension categories have together received concessions totalling Rs 239 crore.In a first for the state, domestic consumers are also being brought under the ToD benefit structure. During the current financial year, households with smart meters are receiving a concession of 85 paise per unit for electricity consumed between 9am and 5pm. So far, 69,35,388 domestic consumers have benefited, with total savings reaching Rs 89 crore on consumption of 1,096 million units. the spokesperson said.He further said the rollout of smart meters in homes is gathering pace, which is expected to further increase the number of domestic consumers availing of the concession.
