Bengaluru: A rowdy created panic last week by roaming around Oil Mill Road with a long machete, threatening passersby and demanding money. When police rushed to the spot to catch him, he threatened to kill them too. He also warned that he would falsely implicate police by attempting suicide, consuming blade and glass pieces, before pushing the officers aside and escaping.The incident took place Thursday night. According to the complaint filed by head constable Mahadev Darur, he and another head constable, Harish Kumar, were on patrol duty on July 30 when around 9pm, they received information that a rowdy — Sufiyan, a 31-year-old resident of DJ Halli — was near Oil Mill Road on Shampura Main Road, armed with a lethal weapon. Sufiyan was brandishing the machete in public, intimidating people and demanding money.Police rushed to the spot around 9.20pm and found Sufiyan — who is involved in several criminal cases, including attempt to murder, attempt at robbery, NDPS offences, and has previously been arrested — at the scene.When the officers identified themselves as personnel from DJ Halli police station and attempted to apprehend him, Sufiyan shouted that he would slit their throats if they came any closer. He showed them shaving blade and glass pieces, threatened to swallow them to attempt suicide, and falsely implicate them in the case.He also warned the officers that he would attack and kill people with the long machete if they continued pursuing him. He then pushed policemen away and managed to escape from the spot around 9.45pm.A case has been registered under BNS sections 226 (attempt to commit suicide to compel or restrain exercise of lawful power) and 351 (criminal intimidation), and under the Arms Act for threatening and terrorising people. A senior officer said Sufiyan was later caught the same night. He is lodged in judicial custody.
