Pune: A 76-year-old retired bank officer from Balewadi lost Rs3.5 lakh after a cyberfraudster posing as a bank representative sent him a malicious APK file on the pretext of preparing his pension card and subsequently siphoned money from his bank account.The fraud occurred between Sept 3 and 4, and the Baner police registered a case on Thursday.An officer from the Baner police said the complainant received a message on his cellphone on Sept 3 from an unknown number. The sender sent him an APK file and called, claiming to be a bank representative. The caller told the complainant that he needed to fill in his bank details in the file to prepare his pension card. The complainant followed the instructions and sent a message to a number provided by the caller. “On Sept 4, Rs2 lakh and Rs1.5 lakh were debited from his bank account through two IMPS transactions,” the officer said.In another similar fraud, a 65-year-old retired bank officer lost Rs5.87 lakh to a cybercrook who posed as a bank officer and offered him a credit card.The crook called the senior citizen on August 15 and told him that the bank was offering credit cards to its former employees. He then asked the complainant to share his bank details through a mobile messaging app. After the complainant shared the details, the crook gained access to his savings and overdraft accounts and siphoned off Rs5.87 lakh. The senior citizen lodged a complaint with the Vishrantwadi police on Thursday.
