Jaipur: The state health department will set up a dedicated Cancer Cell at the Health Directorate to monitor the growing cancer burden and strengthen screening, referrals and follow-up care across the state.The Cancer Cell will function as a central monitoring and coordination unit to streamline cancer screening, referrals, specialist consultations and follow-up services across districts.Officials said the unit will track cancer trends, coordinate with district health authorities and identify gaps in the movement of patients from screening to diagnosis and treatment. It will also monitor the functioning of cancer screening vans to ensure they are deployed effectively and reach targeted communities, particularly in areas with limited access to specialised care.

The department has directed officials to publicise every mobile cancer screening camp at least 10 days in advance. District chief medical and health officers will prepare monthly calendars detailing camp dates, locations and outreach plans to improve public participation and promote early detection.A senior health department official said the state has also introduced revised cancer treatment guidelines to simplify the treatment process and make services more patient-centric. The new system includes telemedicine support to reduce the need for patients to travel repeatedly to Jaipur.From Aug, cancer patients are expected to receive specialist medical oncology consultations through telemedicine facilities at district medical colleges. Doctors from the SMS Medical Board in Jaipur will provide expert opinions remotely, enabling patients to access specialist advice closer to home.Officials said the initiative is expected to benefit patients from remote districts who often face financial and logistical challenges in travelling to Jaipur for consultations and follow-up. By linking district medical colleges with specialist services, the department aims to improve continuity of care and reduce delays in treatment decisions.
