Chandigarh: In a move to bring Punjab Congress leaders together amid continuing differences within the state unit, the party’s senior leadership is expected to meet key leaders from Punjab in New Delhi later this week, following the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting. The proposed interaction is expected to bring Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, senior leader Vijay Inder Singla and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi together at a time when differences within the state unit have remained unresolved despite several rounds of meetings.According to sources, senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, are expected to hold discussions with the Punjab leaders, with the focus likely to be on finding a way to ensure that the party’s key leaders work together ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The interaction is likely to take place on Aug 19 or 20. The meeting will be significant as it could provide an opportunity for the leaders of Punjab Congress to sit together and discuss the way forward. The possibility of a separate interaction with Rahul Gandhi has also gained significance after Bajwa sought an appointment with him last week along with 15 Congress MLAs. The request came amid growing unease within sections of the Punjab unit over the party’s organisational structure and the distribution of responsibilities for the forthcoming elections.Punjab Congress has witnessed differences since the party high command announced election-related committees on July 1 and the decision of the party to retain Warring as state president. Channi and several leaders associated with him have expressed reservations over Warring’s continuation as Punjab Congress president and have sought a more prominent role for Channi in the party’s preparations for the Assembly polls.Party sources have also indicated that the Congress leadership has received feedback and reports on the political situation in Punjab, although it remains to be seen whether these discussions will result in any changes to the existing organisational or election-related committees. Rahul Gandhi is also expected to visit Punjab towards the end of Aug, with a visit to Golden Temple.
