Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad region has consumed nearly 12% extra electricity in the first two weeks of July compared to last year, as temperatures remain high owing to a subdued monsoon this year.Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) officials said that from July 1 to 14, total power consumption in the state touched 2,510 million units (MU), compared with 2,338 MU during the same period last year. This is an increase of 171 MU, or an increase of 7.3%.
Within the Greater Hyderabad (GHMC) area, electricity usage climbed from 957 MU to 1,071 MU, registering a rise of 114 MU or 11.9%. The figures show that the highest electricity consumption in the state was recorded in Greater Hyderabad.TGSPDCL chairman and managing director Jitesh V Patil said that electricity demand usually declines with the onset of the monsoon. However, this July, because of oppressive weather and high moisture levels, the use of air-conditioners remained high, resulting in an increased power demand.“The data indicates a marked increase in power usage not only in Greater Hyderabad but also in rural areas under TGSPDCL, driven by households, commercial establishments, industries, IT firms, agriculture, govt offices, hospitals, educational institutions, and service sector organisations.Officials said the state govt has taken measures like power procurement, expansion of substation capacity, transformer maintenance, feeder monitoring, load management, and strengthening of the electricity network to ensure adequate power availability.Patil said that special maintenance measures have been put in place to prevent any disruption in power supply during the monsoon. Officials, engineers, and field staff are working round the clock, closely monitoring feeders, transformers, and power lines, and rectifying faults immediately to ensure uninterrupted and quality supply to consumers, he said.“Despite the substantial rise in electricity demand caused by severe humidity and the impact of El Niño across the state, the discom is fully prepared to provide reliable, quality, and uninterrupted electricity to domestic, agricultural, commercial, industrial, IT, and service sector consumers in Greater Hyderabad as well as in all urban and rural areas under TGSPDCL,” the CMD said.
