Police seize 14 camels Assam-Bengal border in Dhubri

Dhubri: Police on Saturday seized 14 camels from a truck at Chagolia police outpost, along the Assam-West Bengal border, in Dhubri.The truck was intercepted while entering Assam from West Bengal during routine checking, police sources said. The animals were found to be in a cramped state inside the vehicle, the source added.The driver, identified as Ittar Singh, and his helper, Salman, have been detained for questioning.Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the purpose of the transport and whether required permissions and animal transport regulations were followed. Officials are also verifying where the camels were being taken.A forest official said transportation of camels is governed by the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Transport of Animals Rules, 1978, which lay down welfare standards for animals during transit. The official said the authorities were examining whether these provisions, along with other applicable laws, were violated or not.“During initial questioning, the duo said the camels were being transported to Guwahati. We will continue the interrogation to find out where the animals were being taken and for what purpose,” Lahan said.
