Chennai: Two assistant engineers from Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) were questioned by Anna Nagar police on Thursday in connection with the death of a 59-year-old woman who was electrocuted after falling into an uncovered rainwater-filled pit near Anna Nagar Tower Metro station on Aug 23.Kalavathi, who lived with her husband Mohanraj and daughter Sangeetha, 28, at Padi Pudunagar, worked as a housekeeping employee at a shop in Anna Nagar. She left home around 9pm on Aug 23, heading to church. Around 10.20pm, she fell into a pit which was left open for ongoing stormwater work, and got electrocuted as live electric cables were lying in the open. CCTV footage showed Kalavathi struggling in the water before becoming motionless. On information, police rushed her to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.Police initially registered a case under Section 194 of the BNSS (unnatural or suspicious death), but altered it to a case of negligence after the postmortem report confirmed that Kalavathi had died of electrocution.The assistant engineers of GCC and TNPDCL were questioned by Anna Nagar police inspector Balasubramanian about the circumstances that led to the woman’s death.
