Hyderabad: The need to revive the concept of the “family doctor” to strengthen the doctor-patient relationship and restore public trust in the medical profession emerged as a key theme at an ongoing physicians’ conference.Dr Mahesh Marda, chairman of Premier Hospitals, said family physicians have traditionally served not only as healthcare providers but also as trusted advisers to patients and their families. However, he noted that rapid advances in medical technology, increasing specialisation, and concerns over the commercialisation of healthcare have weakened the personal bond between doctors and patients.Experts stressed that trust remains central to effective healthcare, as patients are more likely to follow treatment plans and medical advice when they have confidence in their physicians. Family doctors, they said, can help bridge this trust deficit by providing continuous and holistic care.Dr Mahesh Marda highlighted the role of family physicians in preventing and managing illnesses, guiding patients through the healthcare system, and helping them make informed decisions. He added that family doctors can also protect patients from unnecessary tests, consultations and medical procedures. The conference noted that healthcare systems built on strong primary care and family medicine deliver better health outcomes, lower costs, and higher patient satisfaction. Participants called for reviving the family doctor model by equipping practitioners with modern skills and technology while preserving the trust and personal connection that have long defined the profession. Speakers concluded that reinventing the family doctor system is essential to rebuilding faith in the medical profession and ensuring patient-centric healthcare in the future.
