Gorakhpur: An awareness programme on maternal and child health, child protection and the importance of breastfeeding was organised at the Anganwadi centre in Purana Gorakhpur on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week.The programme was conducted under the ‘Chuppi Tod – Halla Bol’ project, being implemented by Samadhan Abhiyan with support from India Pesticides Limited. Addressing pregnant women, lactating mothers and parents, resource persons highlighted the crucial role of breastfeeding in ensuring the healthy physical and mental development of infants.Under the guidance of Sheelam Bajpai, director of Samadhan Abhiyan, participants were informed that exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months after birth is the best source of nutrition for a child. Experts said breast milk helps strengthen immunity and supports overall growth and development.The session also focused on child safety and protection. Parents were sensitised about provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, child rights, prevention of child sexual abuse, safe and unsafe touch, the concept of a safe circle and the importance of maintaining positive communication with children.Among those present were Anganwadi chief sevika Ruma Singh, supervisors Firoz Lata Chaudhary, Usha Shukla, Rachna Singh and Uma Parveen, along with Anupam Arya, Sarita Chauhan, Durgi Katina, Usha Majum, Archita Shailendra, Namita Ikram, Anita Devi and Sharda Singh. Coordinators and volunteers of Samadhan Abhiyan also participated in the programme.
