Mangaluru: MLC PV Mohan Saturday alleged that Padil railway station, established to serve local residents when Mangaluru Junction was developed, has yet to receive adequate infrastructure, essential train halts, or basic facilities, even after several decades.“It has been nearly 120 years since rail connectivity was introduced to Mangaluru. As one of South India’s major railway hubs, the city has contributed significantly to the economic, educational, and commercial growth of coastal Karnataka. Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction (Kankanady) stations have become integral to the daily lives of lakhs of people. However, Padil railway station continues to be neglected, causing inconvenience to thousands,” Mohan said after visiting the station. He described the station as a “symbol of neglect,” attributing the situation to a lack of political will. “The legitimate demands of the people in this area have been ignored for years. Over 1,400 families live near the station, and residents risk their lives every day by crossing railway tracks to move between areas. The hardships faced by schoolchildren, senior citizens, women, and pregnant women have gone unnoticed,” he said.Mohan also pointed out that the Karwar–Bengaluru Panchaganga Superfast Express (16596), which passes through the route, does not halt at Padil. “The absence of a halt between Surathkal and Bantwal is neither fair nor passenger-friendly. A stop at Padil would benefit thousands and help ease traffic congestion in Mangaluru city. This is not a privilege, but the right of the people,” he added.Noting that Padil station falls under the Palakkad Division, the MLC said he would soon meet the divisional railway manager and other senior officials to present the demands of local residents. These include introducing a halt for the Panchaganga Express and constructing a safe foot overbridge or underpass.“There is no room for political differences on this issue. With the cooperation of the local MP, MLAs, elected representatives, and citizens’ organisations, I will continue the fight until Padil railway station gets the status and facilities it deserves,” Mohan said.
