Filed by NidhiLudhiana: After the residents raised the issue of open garbage dumping at 100-feet road in Sherpur, the civic body on Thursday started cleaning the site. Mayor Inderjit Kaur conducted a surprise inspection and issued a strict warning to the officials and residents over open dumping of garbage. The residents complained that there was a foul smell all around and people from other areas also threw garbage here.They rued that some people even feed stray cattle here on this road near heaps of garbage dump and as a result, the cattle keep on roaming on these roads and they fear accidents as well. The civic body has been claiming to curb menace created due to open garbage dumping, but in the absence of proper monitoring and strict action, the problem is still the same. Even at the national highway, open garbage dumping is a major issue these days.The mayor questioned zonal commissioner Neeraj Jain and also raised questions on the absence of the sanitation staff in the area. She said she was waiting for one hour and no sweeper came for duty.The mayor issued a strict warning to the health branch officials concerned of the civic body and the residents over dumping of garbage in the open. The residents have been warned that hefty challans would be issued against the violators. Similarly the civic body officials have been directed to ensure cleanliness otherwise strict departmental action would be taken against them.She also interacted with the residents of the area and took feedback for improvements. The officials concerned have also been directed to clean a choked sewer line in the area. She said rigorous steps were being taken under ‘Mission Clean Punjab’ to ensure cleanliness.Mayor Inderjit Kaur said the residents were also at fault as it had been witnessed that many had been dumping garbage in the open. Earlier too, the civic body had cleaned the 100-feet road, but garbage was again seen dumped at the site during inspection on Thursday.She appealed to the residents that they should also perform their duty towards society and stop dumping garbage in the open otherwise strict action would also be taken against the residents in the coming time.She directed the health branch officials to monitor the situation at ground level and ensure cleanliness, otherwise strict departmental action would be taken against them. She said that surprise inspections would continue in the coming days too.
