Times News NetworkMohali: Police on Saturday claimed to have busted an inter-state online cheating gang with the arrest of 10 persons from Zirakpur. The gang was allegedly involved in duping people living abroad by luring them with offers of loans at low interest rates. Police also recovered laptops and mobile phones allegedly used in the fraud.Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans said the arrested accused have been identified as Melvin Thokar of Gujarat, Aniruddh Panihiya of Himachal Pradesh, Anant Dev Kaushik and Pawan Pandyewar of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Sonu Diyali, Milan Sunwar, Aasik Darji and Arjun Kshetri from West Bengal, and Prashant Omprakash Jaiswal and Palwinder Singh of Lalru in Punjab.Police said nine laptops and 12 mobile phones were seized from the accused. According to investigators, the gang operated on the directions of its kingpin, Melvin Thokar. They allegedly contacted people living abroad through online calling platforms and offered loans at attractive interest rates. They would then demand payments in dollars or other foreign currency to cheat the victims. Police said the group had no valid permission to disburse loans.Officials said the gang was systematically targeting foreign nationals while operating from India.
