Gurgaon: A local court has sentenced a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 for snatching a mobile phone in Punhana in 2022.District and Sessions Judge Dr Sushil Kumar Garg passed the order on Tuesday, holding accused Salim, a resident of Fusaita village in Nuh’s Bichhor police station area, guilty of the offence.According to police, the incident took place on May 13, 2022, when complainant Irshad, a resident of Dallabas, was talking on his mobile phone at Dallabas Chowk. Salim allegedly snatched the phone and tried to flee. Irshad chased him and managed to catch him at the spot, following which the phone was recovered and police were informed.During the investigation, police also allegedly recovered a country-made pistol from Salim’s possession and added relevant Arms Act provisions to the case. After hearing the case, the court held that Salim had snatched the complainant’s mobile phone and was also carrying an illegal firearm. The court observed that excessive leniency in such offences could send a wrong message to society and, after considering the circumstances, awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment along with the fine.
