Kolkata: Two spells of heavy rain on Monday afternoon left areas in north and central Kolkata, including arterial roads, inundated, leading to traffic snarls that lasted for hours.KMC sources said several areas in north and northeast Kolkata went under water following torrential rain between 1 pm and 3 pm. The highest rainfall — more than 100 mm — was recorded from the Kulia-Tangra area.. Similarly, areas like Ultadanga, Maniktala, Phoolbagan and Beleghata clocked around 75 mm of rainfall. In central Kolkata, College Street, Thanthania, Amherst Street, MG Road and Sukeas Street recorded more than 70 mm of rainfall. As a result, storm water took longer to recede from these areas.The downpour slowed traffic at several points, including on MG Road, which connects Howrah to Sealdah, and CR Avenue, besides Entally and Moulali. Slow traffic led to several commuters heading to Sealdah station getting delayed due to waterlogging on the northbound flank. Several important stretches, like Muktarambabu Street, Thanthania, Amherst Street, parts of Kankurgachhi, Ultadanga and Patipukur, went under ankle-deep water, forcing vehicles to move slowly. Police had to switch to manual signalling even during peak evening hours.The rainfall resulted in severe waterlogging on several stretches across Sector V and Salt Lake.
