Nod given, 457 trees to make way for four infra projects

Mumbai: BMC’s Tree Authority on Monday cleared proposals to cut 253 trees and transplant 204 others for four infrastructure projects. The biggest proposal relates to the construction of a new clear water pumping station in Bhandup West with a capacity of 2,000 million litres per day, for which 184 trees are planned to be cut and 150 transplanted. The remaining trees are to be retained at the site. For demolition of an existing structure and construction of a new staff building at KEM Hospital in Parel, it has been proposed that 28 of the existing 196 trees should be axed, 22 transplanted and 146 trees to be retained. Another proposal seeks the removal of 29 of 42 trees and transplantation of 13 coming in the way of a workshop in Matunga meant for Central Railway’s fifth and sixth lines project between CSMT and Kurla. At the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre campus in Trombay, a proposed construction on the northern side will affect 71 of 86 trees at the site. Twelve of them have been proposed to be removed and 19 transplanted.
