Its teams are also running awareness drives alongside enforcement.“Shopkeepers are being asked not to dump garbage outside their shops and to ensure that dustbins are provided, so that the spread of waste in the open can be prevented. Our objective is to strengthen sanitation arrangements in market areas and develop a sense of responsibility towards cleanliness among shopkeepers and citizens,” said MCG spokesperson SS Rohilla.Officials said markets see heavy footfall, and shopkeepers and other stakeholders are responsible for keeping their surroundings clean and disposing of waste properly. The civic body warned that action against violations would continue and appealed to shopkeepers and market stakeholders to follow sanitation rules, keep dustbins at their establishments and refrain from dumping waste outside their shops. MCG officials said sustained participation from shopkeepers and residents would be necessary to maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the city’s markets.
