No bidders again for MC causeway repair work; tender to be floated after monsoon

Chandigarh: The municipal corporation’s engineering department has failed to attract a single bidder for the second consecutive time for the repair and strengthening of the causeway connecting Industrial Area Phase I with Chandigarh Railway Station. Officials said the tender will now be floated again after the monsoon season.Sources said major repair work cannot be undertaken during the rains. However, the MC has carried out minor repairs, recarpeting and safety measures to ensure uninterrupted traffic movement on the busy stretch. The causeway, built across the Sukhna Choe in 1998, suffered significant damage during last year’s monsoon due to heavy water flow. Portions of its wing walls and side structures were damaged, while iron railings were washed away.Officials said a tender worth around Rs 40 lakh was prepared incorporating all safety and structural requirements, but no contractor came forward. The structure is designed to allow normal water flow through pipes beneath it, while excess monsoon discharge passes over the causeway. The route serves as a key entry point for commuters travelling from Panchkula, Manimajra, Daria and the Chandigarh railway station area, making it one of the city’s busiest traffic corridors.
