Aizawl: Nirupam Chakma, appointed by Mizoram Governor Gen. Vijay Kumar Singh as chief executive member (CEM) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), won a vote of confidence on Thursday, with 18 members of district council (MDCs) in the 20-member council voting in his favour and none voting against him.The floor test was presided over by deputy chairman Sundor Muni Chakma as the council has had no chairman since the resignation of chairman Lakkhan Chakma on July 1, 2025. Rasik Mohan Chakma of the Mizo National Front (MNF) and the lone opposition member did not attend the sitting.Nirupam was appointed as CEM of CADC by the governor on July 3 after staking claim to form the executive committee on June 23. He took the oath of office on Wednesday.The new executive committee has been formed jointly by the Chakma Democratic Alliance Legislature Party, comprising 10 BJP members and nine Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) members, in the 20-seat CADC.A former Mizoram minister and current member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), Nirupam represented Tuichawng in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly from 1986 to 2013. He joined the BJP in 2015 after serving as a Congress minister, and was the first minister from the Chakma community in Mizoram.
