NIMS introduces minimally invasive brain procedure for treating Parkinson’s

Hyderabad: To treat patients with severe tremors caused by Parkinson’s disease and Essential tremor disorder, the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) has started offering MRI-guided Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), a minimally invasive brain procedure for patients whose symptoms do not improve with medicines.The procedure uses MRI guidance to accurately target a small area of the brain that causes tremors. It uses radiofrequency energy to stop the abnormal signals while protecting the surrounding healthy brain tissue. Unlike Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), RFA does not require electrodes, wires or batteries to be implanted, leading to a smaller incision, shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.“Radiofrequency ablation is a safe and effective treatment for selected patients with severe tremors. It helps them regain independence and improves their quality of life Unlike conventional brain surgery, RFA does not require implantation of any electrodes, wires or batteries. The procedure involves only a small incision, and most patients experience immediate or significant improvement in tremors, enabling them to regain independence in their daily activities. The shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery and avoidance of implanted hardware make this an excellent treatment option for carefully selected patients,” said Dr Vamsi Krishna.
