NGO offers to set up medical college, university hospital in PPP mode

Bathinda: NGO 5 Rivers Heart Association (5RHA) has submitted a proposal to the Punjab govt offering to establish a medical college and teaching hospital in Nawanshahr under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The project is envisioned as the first phase of the proposed Panjab University Hospital and Institute of Advanced Medical Sciences, which aims to become Punjab’s first comprehensive university hospital and academic medical centre. The proposal outlines a long-term vision that integrates advanced patient care, medical education, research, innovation and workforce development within a single academic health system. According to the NGO, the initiative would expand access to specialised healthcare services in Punjab, strengthen medical training, attract global expertise and investment, and contribute to the state’s economic growth.Led by 5RHA and supported by a network of physicians, scientists, educators, healthcare leaders and members of the Punjabi diaspora in the United States, the project seeks to create a sustainable institution capable of serving future generations while positioning Punjab as a centre for healthcare excellence and medical innovation.“We believe Punjab has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create an institution that not only delivers exceptional healthcare but also trains future healthcare leaders, advances research, attracts global collaborations and strengthens the state’s long-term prosperity,” said Dr Swaiman Singh of 5RHA.“Our goal is simple yet ambitious: to ensure that future generations can access world-class healthcare, education and research opportunities without leaving Punjab,” he added. The association has urged the Punjab government to consider the proposal and expressed its willingness to collaborate in advancing a shared vision for healthcare, education and innovation in the state.
