Chandigarh: Nanaksar sect head Baba Lakha Singh on Tuesday met chief minister Bhagwant Mann and hailed the Punjab govt for passing the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026.During the meeting, Baba Lakha Singh described the legislation as a path-breaking initiative that would address the hurt sentiments of the Sikh community and deter future incidents of sacrilege.“This legislation reflects the commitment of the Punjab govt towards protecting the honour and sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib,” he said.He said the law would help uphold the sanctity of Shabad Guru and strengthen confidence among the Sikh community that incidents of Beadbi would be dealt with firmly.Mann said Baba Lakha Singh had appreciated the Jaagat Jot Satkar Act, 2026, and presented him with a Siropa. “It is the foremost duty of our govt to uphold the honour, respect and maryada of Shabad Guru, Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib,” he said.The Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 was passed by the Punjab Legislative Assembly on April 13 and notified on April 20 after the Governor’s assent. The law amends the 2008 Act and provides stricter penal provisions, including imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life and heavy fines for desecration.
