Dibrugarh: The Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus (MJBT), which was built to serve as Dibrugarh’s primary bus hub but was lying underutilised, began formal operations on Monday. The city’s Bus and Traveller Stand is now located at the terminus situated alongside AT Road (NH-37) near the Convoy Road Flyover. District commissioner Bikram Kairi ordered the move on June 16.Historically, most buses bypassed the terminus, preferring to stop within the city, leaving the facility idle despite its strategic location near the Dibrugarh Railway Station at Banipur. To ensure a smooth transition on the first day, officials from the police, administration, transport department and Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation were deployed at the site to monitor traffic movement and passenger facilities. Authorities urged commuters and transport operators to use the MJBT for all travel-related services and to cooperate with officials during the transition period.Under the order, no buses will be permitted to enter the city beyond the MJBT, though school and college buses are exempted form the restriction. The district transport officer has been directed to arrange adequate feeder services at the terminus to ensure last-mile connectivity for passengers, while Dibrugarh traffic police has issued a dedicated route map and advisory for operators. Violations are punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The immediate trigger for the move is the upcoming construction of the Amolapatty Junction Flyover, which is expected to intensify traffic congestion in the city. The public works (roads) department had formally flagged concerns that the proposed service road would be suitable only for light motor vehicles and two-wheelers, making the continued operation of heavy vehicles inside the city both dangerous and unmanageable. The ongoing construction of the Mancotta Road Flyover compounds the situation.
