Gurgaon: As the city’s railway station undergoes redevelopment, Gurgaon MP and Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh demanded from Centre better rail connectivity, more train stoppages and faster redevelopment of stations to cater to the growing number of commuters.The Gurgaon railway station is being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore. However, at present, only trains moving towards Delhi, Jaipur and Rajasthan stop at the station. Residents have to travel to New Delhi, Anand Vihar and Nizamuddin railway stations to catch trains for other parts of the country.In a meeting with railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday, Singh highlighted that for thousands of daily commuters travelling between Gurgaon, Rewari and Delhi, a modern railway station alone may not solve the connectivity problem unless more trains stop at these stations and local services are expanded.Singh also called for acceleration of the construction work, as commuters should not have to wait indefinitely for basic facilities while the redevelopment is under way.The redevelopment, part of the broader national programme to upgrade railway stations, is intended to provide better passenger amenities and improve the overall station experience with improved access and passenger facilities. According to the details shared during Wednesday’s meeting, the new station will be five storeys high with dedicated spaces for various commercial activities.The ongoing redevelopment of Rewari and Pataudi railway stations was also discussed, along with other issues regarding railway underpasses, washing lines, halts and foot overbridges at various locations.Singh also demanded operation of MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) trains on the Delhi-Rewari rail section, for short and medium-distance intercity travel between the two cities.“Railway minister has assured to examine the demands and work towards their implementation,” said Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh. Moreover, the railway minister said that once the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme work is completed, the number of train halts at the station would also be increased.
