Gorakhpur: Two youths accused of snatching a mobile phone from a passerby in Gorakhpur were arrested within 48 hours of the incident, with police recovering the stolen phone and the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.During questioning, the accused allegedly told police that they had planned to sell the phone and use the proceeds to buy gifts for their girlfriends. They also claimed that they were not habitual criminals and had committed the offence for the first time.According to police, the incident took place around 11.30am on October 6 in the Ramgarhtal area, when two motorcycle-borne youths allegedly snatched a mobile phone and fled. Following a complaint from the victim, police registered a case and began examining CCTV footage from the area.Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by acting Ramgarhtal SHO Manish Kumar Pandey arrested the accused.The arrested men were identified as Mohammad Taj, 23, and Shahid, 22, both residents of Badgo under the Ramgarhtal police station area. Police said Taj works as an autorickshaw driver, while Shahid is unemployed.During verification, police found that Shahid had previously been booked in a kidnapping case involving a girl in 2024 and had served a jail term in the case.Police said further inquiries are underway to ascertain whether the duo was involved in any other criminal activities.
